My Baby Used to Love Me So Doggone Sweet

If anyone was going to sing a song with this title, it was pretty clear what kind of guy he had to be. So the song sort of wrote itself; I just had to rewrite it a few dozen times. I had the title first, and kept trying to substitute something else she wouldn't give this clueless character -- a damn? A fig? A rip? But I kept coming back to the cheeky original.

LYRICS

My baby once loved me
she don't any more
I'll never know why she
walked out that door
just because I said her cooking’s not that great
and I let her know she's putting on some weight

I don't know why she didn't stick
you know my baby used to love me so doggone sweet
now she don't give a lick

Although there were times when
she seemed morose
I'll never know why she
said adios
just 'cause I'm a gambler, just 'cause I'm a lush
I don't like to shave and I forget to flush

can’t she see the guy that I am?
you know my baby used to love me so doggone sweet
now she don't give a damn

She must have had her reasons
they always have their reasons
that's the thing with wives
she said that I was lyin’
the plates a-started flyin’
then the forks and knives

just because I like to drink a little bit
don’t I always tell her, I’m a gonna quit
just because I like to take a little nap
and I like those girls who dance right in your lap

She never got angry
or made a fuss
how could she explode like
Vesuvius?
just because I said that she's my ball and chain
cause I call Sarah — and her name is Jane
just because that pair of panties in our bed
happened to belong to someone else instead

I don't know why we didn't click
you know my baby used to love me so doggone sweet
made my life oh so complete
but there won’t be no repeat
'cause she don't, baby she don't, give a lick
